Participatory risk assessment of
humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) bycatch in Northern Peru
Research Goals

Use a low-cost, participatory approach to identify areas of high risk of humpback whale bycatch, identify gaps in current data monitoring, and provide specific recommendations for mitigation for humpback whale bycatch.

Research Aims

Compile existing data from publicly accessed sources

Collaborate with local scientists and communities to create a spatially explicit geodatabase of fisheries effort

Model species distribution of humpback whales within fishing areas

Apply the open-source Bycatch risk assessment (ByRA) toolbox

Produce maps to display ByRA toolbox result and train local scientists on ByRA
